×Stig Brorson is a clinical professor in orthopedic surgery at the University of Copenhagen, and a consultant shoulder surgeon at Zealand University Hospital, Denmark. He holds a Ph.D. degree in medical philosophy and a doctoral degree in fractures of the proximal humerus. He is the founding leader of the independent Centre for Evidence-Based Orthopedics. Stig has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.
His scholarly work covers most aspects of proximal humerus fractures, including their cultural history, taxonomy, epidemiology, diagnostics, classification, clinical decision-making, evidence-based management, outcome assessment, and complications. In his clinical work, Stig is responsible for treating 250 elderly patients with shoulder fractures annually, with less than 5 percent being treated surgically. He has conducted national and international multi-center studies and summarized current evidence in clinical guidelines, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Stig is an advocate of evidence-based shoulder surgery, and he has questioned the benefits of surgical interventions in proximal humerus fractures in the elderly.

×My Orthopaedic Residency was in Lyon, from which I graduated in 1998. Following this my Fellowship was spent also in Lyon working with Dr Gilles Walch. I then started my practice, joining the Centre Orthopédique Santy with a group of 12 orthopaedic surgeons. ×Hiroyuki Sugaya, MD, is a Tokyo based shoulder & elbow specialist. He established Tokyo Sports & Orthopaedic Clinic (TSOC) in September 2020, and will open TSOC KITASANDO in January 2025 in Tokyo. Dr. Iannotti received his MD from Northwestern University in 1979, completed his Orthopaedic Residency training at the University of Pennsylvania in 1984, and received a PhD in cell biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987.

×I am a hand, peripheral nerve and upper limb surgeon in Annecy, France.
After going to medical school in Lyon, I trained in Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery in Paris during my 5 years residency program.
I early started microsurgery, attending Pr Oberlin microsurgical and Hand surgery training program.
Along with general orthopaedic surgery, I specialized in nerve, and microvascular surgery in order to perform limb reconstruction.
I attended two 6 months fellowships:
In 2013, I was a fellow in Alps Surgery Institute with Laurent Lafosse to learn Shoulder surgery and arthroscopy. This enabled me to start working on my thesis on the topic of endoscopic brachial plexus release, which led to several publications. In 2015, I attended a travelling fellowship in Thailand with Pr Somsak Leechavengvongs from Bangkok, for brachial plexus surgery, and with Pr Kanit Sananpanich from Chiangmai for microvascular reconstruction of the limbs.
In November 2015 I started my fellowship in Paris, as a Chef de Clinique, Assistant des Hôpitaux, where I did brachial plexus, hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder surgery with Pr Masmejean, and reconstruction of the limbs with Pr Lantieri. The department was specialised in emergencies of the hand.
I started my own practice in November 2017, as a partner in Clinic Generale d'Annecy.
My activity in Annecy is shoulder surgery, peripheral nerve surgery along with hand surgery and the development of a hand trauma center (SOS main).
I also have an activity of congénital hand deformities surgery and obstetrical brachial plexus surgery, participating to missions since 2012 with the Chain Of Hope, mostly in Afghanistan, Iran and Jordan.

×Laurent LAFOSSE is a upper extremity surgeon specialized in Shoulder Arthroscopiy and Arthroplasty. Born and raised in PARIS, he underwent training with Goutallier and Patte. He started his private practice in 1989 Clinique Generale in Annecy and in 2005 at Clinique Beaulieu in Geneva Switzerland. ×Mr Amar Malhas is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Berkshire NHS trust. After completing extensive fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery he has been in post since 2016 and is the senior shoulder and elbow surgeon in the trust.
Having qualified in 2004 from King’s College London, he completed his training on the Birmingham and Dundee rotations. He then was a fellow, firstly, at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and then at the Wrightington Orthopaedic Hospital in its prestigious Upper Limb Unit.
At Reading he has a busy practice of sports injuries, degenerative soft tissue conditions and arthritis of the shoulder. He also runs a specialty service for shoulder and elbow trauma. He is the lead local PI for several multi-center studies and frequently participates as faculty in arthroplasty and arthroscopy courses. As chairperson of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Foundation, Dr. Miniaci led the creation of the National Shoulder and Elbow Health Week, now a nationally recognized event which was established to raise awareness and support for shoulder problems. This event has resulted in numerous grants, recognition and funding dedicated to improving shoulder care for patients throughout North America. Most recently he has been elected by his peers at the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons to its Presidential line. ×Philipp Moroder is the Head of the Shoulder and Elbow Unit at the Charitè University Hospital in Berlin. He completed his training with Herbert Resch, Peter Habermeyer, and Markus Scheibel. In 2018 he was selected for the ASES Traveling Fellowship.
×Lionel Neyton, MD is an orthopaedic surgeon specialized in shoulder surgery. After completing his residency program in Nancy, he ran a one-year shoulder fellowship with Gilles Walch in 2003. He then joined Pascal Boileau’s department in Nice, France for three years of junior practice. Since November 2006, he’s Gilles Walch’s partner at Centre Orthopédique Santy in Lyon, France. ×Dr. Nicholson received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis and performed his residency at University Hospital of Cleveland /Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, OH. He subsequently completed a shoulder/elbow fellowship at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital, Columbia/Presbyterian Medical Center, in New York City. He was in practice with OrthoIndy in Indianapolis, IN for nine years and then came to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL in 2001.
In Chicago, Dr. Nicholson is a partner at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, and is an associate professor of Orthopaedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He is the incoming congress president 2024 of the German Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (DVSE). Dr. Raiss did his residency at the Orthopaedic University Hospital in Heidelberg and at the BG-Unfallklinik Ludwigshafen, Germany. Between 2011-2012 he underwent a 1-year Shoulder Fellowship in Lyon, France with Dr. Gilles Walch. Afterwards he returned to the Orthopaedic University Hospital where he worked as a Consultant Surgeon and received his professorship in 2016. Ricchetti, MD, completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Eric T. Ricchetti, MD is a staff surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and is an Associate Professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He holds the Maynard Madden Endowed Professorship in Arthritis Research and is the Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He is also the Director of the Shoulder Center, as well as Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Fellowship Program in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Ricchetti’s clinical practice is focused on the treatment of disorders of the shoulder, including management of primary and revision shoulder problems in joint arthroplasty and rotator cuff disease. His research interests have focused on examining clinical outcomes after total shoulder arthroplasty and rotator cuff repair. He has received grant funding from multiple sources related to these areas of research, including an R01 grant award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and he was recognized with the 2015 Charles S. Neer Award for Basic Science Research by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES).
×Dr. Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, MD PhD practices as a Consultant in Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA). Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo was born in Madrid, Spain. He graduated as Medical Doctor from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid Medical School (Spain) and obtained the #1 position in the Spanish National Exam for Medical Graduates in 1992.
Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo completed his Residency Program at Hospital Universitario La Paz and his PhD Program at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. He was then selected for a fellowship position at Mayo Clinic and completed a two year program in adult reconstruction of the lower (hip and knee) and upper (shoulder and elbow) extremities. Currently, Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo practices as Consultant in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic, where he is actively involved in outpatient consultations, surgical procedures, research and teaching activities. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo is also appointed as full Professor at Mayo College of Medicine. He serves as Program Director for the Mayo Clinic Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, and ViceChairman for the Division of Adult Reconstruction. He has been presented the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year Award on two separate occasions and has received other research recognitions in the past, including the Mark B. Coventry, Melvin Post, MidAmerica Orthopedic Association, Knee Society and AAOS Achievement’s Awards. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo is member of multiple professional societies, and currently serves as active member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Membership Committee, as well as Associate Editor for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty, and the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma. He was recently appointed as Board member for American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo has published over 175 articles in the peer-reviewed literature in addition to over 50 book chapters. He is co-editor of the most widely read textbook on elbow surgery, “The Elbow and Its Disorders”.
Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo just published Mayo Clinic Principles of Shoulder Surgery, a book directed to individuals starting their training in the field of shoulder surgery. He is actively involved in the design of implants for joint replacement and fracture fixation. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo serves as course co-director for the Mayo Clinic Annual Elbow Course “Teach the teachers”, and the Mayo Clinic Course on Shoulder Tendon Transfers and Complex Rotator Cuff Tears. He has presented his research in numerous occasions at national and international meetings. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo has developed a special interest in complex reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and elbow joints, as well as in basic science research related to the genetic and molecular basis of orthopedic conditions, particularly joint stiffness, as well as the biomechanics of shoulder and elbow injuries and implants.

Dr. Robert Tashjian is a Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, UT specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery. Dr. Tashjian received his medical doctorate from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. He completed an orthopaedic residency at Brown Medical School in Providence, RI followed by an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Brown. Dr. Tashjian completed an additional fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at Washington University in St. Louis under the direction of Ken Yamaguchi, MD. Dr. Tashjian's primary clinical focus centers on all aspects of primary and revision shoulder and elbow surgery including labral tears, rotator cuff tears, arthritis and fractures including shoulder arthroplasty and post-reconstructive procedures. ×Born in Paris, doctor Philippe Valenti did a fellowship in Paris university and was interested to the surgery of the upper limb under the influence of the professors Alain Gilbert and AC Masquelet. As microsurgeon, he developed his experience on hand reconstruction, nerve surgery, brachial plexus surgery and free flap transfer. He worked between 1987 -1989 with Dr Didier Patte before to travel to United states to visit Dr Rick Matsen and Dr Charles Rockwood .
In 1995, Dr Valenti was admitted in the ”Institut de la main” where he focused is activity on shoulder reconstruction( arthroplasty, arthroscopy, nerves reconstruction and tendon transfer). In 2003, Doctor Valenti is one of the designers of the first complete convertible shoulder prosthesis (Arrow shoulder arthroplasty). In 2004, Doctor Valenti was president of the French microsurgery society(GAM) and since 2008 he is the general secretary of this French microsurgery society. In 2012, He organized in Paris the congress of the European Federation Microsurgery Society (EFMS).
Doctor Philippe Valenti is a member of the French orthopaedic society(SOFCOT), French Society of Arthroscopy (SFA), European Shoulder and Elbow Society (SECEC), American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Society of Elbow and Shoulder (ASES). He is also a correspondent International Member of many Orthopaedic Societies (Chili, Columbia, Argentina, Brazil). In 2013, Dr Valenti organized with Ph Hardy the first Paris international shoulder course. We will do the fourth edition in 2019 with more than 500 attendees and specialists of shoulder surgery.
This year (2017-2018) Dr Valenti is the president of the French society of shoulder and elbow(SOFEC) and Vice president of the French academy of orthopedic and traumatology (AOT) He has over 50 publications on PubMed and has written four books including « Tendon transfer for irreparable cuff tear » (Springer). He is also a founder and member of the French humanitarian association «Chaîne de l’espoir» and Vice president of Chaîne de l’espoir.
×Prof. Olivier Verborgt is a shoulder surgeon and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology at AZ Monica in Antwerp, Belgium.
After his studies and specialization in orthopedics at the University of Antwerp, he sub-specialized in shoulder surgery completing fellowships in Clinique Jouvenet in Paris and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was responsible for shoulder surgery in AZ St Lucas in Brugge between 2005 and 2011. In october 2011 he joined the Orthopaedic Surgery Department of AZ Monica in Antwerp and became consultant at the University Hospital of Antwerp and guest professor at the University of Antwerp.
He is the past-president of the Belgian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (BVOT). He is committee member of the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SECEC) and member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) and is active in clinical and basic research about shoulder pathology with multiple peer publications.
×Native of Lyon France and pure product of the Lyonnaise Orthopedic school, Doctor Gilles Walch focused on shoulder disorders very early in his career.After numerous publications on patello-femoral instability and natural history of cruciate ligament rupture, he travelled to the United States to visit Dr Franck Jobe and Dr Ch Rockwood. Since his return to France Dr Walch has focused completely on the shoulder, improving the understanding and treatment of various shoulder disorders.
In 1993 he organised the first ‘Journées de l’épaule’ in Lyon. Over 1000 European specialists including orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, radiologists and rehabilitation specialists consolidated 10 years of collaboration with the purpose of identifying and quantifying the different shoulder pathologies.The results of the collaboration have allowed careful analysis of poor results, complications and failures to improve treatment.
From 1987 to 1995 Dr Walch was the General Secretary of the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow before holding the office of President from 2005 to 2007. He is corresponding member of the ASES since 1994 and was elected President of the French Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (SOFCOT) 2014-2015.
He was distinguished as Honorary Member of several European Orthopedic Society including Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, France and Greece. He is also member of 8 scientific societies and was invited as Visiting Professor in many University Hospitals all around the world.
He published more than 300 articles in national and international journals and has lectured at some 500 conferences across the world. He wrote numerous book chapters and edited 4 books on Shoulder Arthroplasty.
Dr Walch is one of the designers of the Aequalis Shoulder prostheses family. He has been a pioneer in the understanding of shoulder conditions and has developed several concept including internal impingement, arthroscopic tenotomy of the biceps in massive RCT, hidden lesion of the Subscapularis, the Latarjet procedure, the classification of arthritic glenoid, the role of the Teres Minor in MRCT and the musculo-tendinous rupture of the Infraspinatus
For the last 25 years he has concentrated exclusively on surgery and arthroscopy of the shoulder with shoulder instability, rupture of the rotator cuff and shoulder arthroplasty forming the basis of his day to day work.
×Jean-David Werthel is a shoulder surgeon from Paris, France. He completed his medical school at the University Paris V René Descartes and his residency at Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris (Public Assistance - Paris Hospitals). He conducted his fellowship at Hôpital Bichat and Hôpital Ambroise Paré and spent a year as a research fellow in the biomechanics lab of the Mayo Clinic.
His interests are in complex reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and clinical outcomes as well as in basic science research related to the biomechanics of the shoulder and of shoulder implants. He is involved in the design of implants for shoulder replacements and has presented his research in numerous occasions at national and international meetings. He is an active member of the Chaine de l’Espoir, a French nonprofit organization working with disadvantaged children, with which he performs regular surgical missions for obstetric brachial plexus injuries and hand congenital deformities.
Jean-David has published over fifty scientific articles and is a reviewer for shoulder articles and corresponding member in International Orthopedics.
×Dr. med. Karl Wieser is Professor at the University of Zurich and Head of the Shoulder and Elbow Unit at the Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland.
Despite his clinical work as a highly specialized shoulder and elbow surgeon Dr. Wieser has a strong scientific interest in rotator cuff disorders and its associated myotendinous degeneration, shoulder instability and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. In cooperation with the different research departments of the Balgrist Campus he is also highly interested and active in the translation of cutting-edge technologies like patient specific instrumentation and Augmented Reality into the clinical use. ×JC (Jae Chul) Yoo is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Sungkyunkwan University, Samsung Medical Center, Chief of Shoulder and Elbow Division, He is currently President of Korean Shoulder Elbow Society.
Dr. Yoo did his undergraduate from Northwestern University in 1989, his MD in Korea University, School of Medicine, completed his Orthopaedic Residency training at the Korea University in 1994.
Dr. Yoo’s clinical and basic science research program focuses on biomechanics, subscapularis tendon tears and rotator cuff tears, also in Asian leading shoulder arthroplasty surgeries and research.

×Professor Matthias Zumstein is currently Section Head of Shoulder, Elbow and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at Sonnenhof Orthopaedics in Bern, Switzerland. He was Section Head of Shoulder, Elbow Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and also Senior Consultant of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, at the Bern University Hospital (Inselspital) Bern, Switzerland. Professor Zumstein was Deputy Clinical Director until 2019. Professor Zumstein is also an active member of Sportclinic #1, Bern.
He had the privilege of completing his research and clinical fellowships in shoulder surgery with Professor Christian Gerber in Zurich, Switzerland and Professor Pascal Boileau in Nice, France.
